Rowland was born in Berea to William H. Chappel, a southerner, and Margaret E. Hulet Chappel, daughter of a prominent Berea quarry owner, philanthropist, and mayor. He died at age 2 years, 28 days. The cause of death was not recorded. For more information on his family, see entries for Margaret E. Hulet Chappel, Fletcher Hulet, and Fanny Hulet. Rowland died before Berea recorded burials, and he was buried in a lot that was at the time on his grandfather's land but was later donated to the cemetery. His stone was transcribed in 1904 as saying "Rowland G., son of W. and M. Chappel, d. July 28, 1854, ae 2 yrs 28 da". A 1934 transcription record did not record his stone, suggesting that it was broken and lying face down or missing. Repairs in 1934 restored it to place, and it is now cemented to a sandstone base in the family lot. In 2007, the white marble stone was very dirty but mostly legible, except for the date of death, which is worn and only partly legible. The west face of the stone is inscribed "Little Rowland." Rowland Chappel had a marble tablet on a base. It was 22 1/2 inches high, 11 1/4 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. It was of sound condition, but had eroded and had moss and lichens covering it. There had been previous repairs with cement and mortar. In 2009, the grave marker was cleaned of natural material with D-2 and water. His tombstone was inscribed: "Rowland G. Son of W. and M. Chappel d. July 28, 1854 ae 2 Yrs 28 da" (west face)Little Rowland" (east face). He was born on June 3, 1852 and died on July 28, 1854 when he was 2 years and 28 days old.
