| Jane Johnson was born in 1803, in Ireland. She married Thomas Johnson. Although newspaper obituaries claim that Thomas Johnson’s family moved to Middleburg Twp c. 1834, they were first enumerated in Middleburg Twp. in the 1850 census. Thomas was 50, a grocer with real estate worth $300, from Ireland. Wife Jane was 43, also from Ireland. Children were Edwin, 20, a sailor, born in NY; Eleanor, 18, born in NY; William, 14, born in Ohio, attending school; and Mary J., 13, born in OH, attending school. Also in the household were Daniel Sullivan, 16, a laborer, born in Ireland, attending school; and John Sullivan, 12, from MI, attending school. The family was enumerated in 1860, in Berea, Middleburg Twp. Thomas Johnson was 60, a grocer with $2,000 of real estate and $500 personal property, born in Ireland. His wife's name was given as Ellen or Eilen J., age 60, also born in Ireland. Children at home were William, 23, an officer, born in OH; and Mary Jane, 23, born in OH. Thomas and Jane were enumerated in the 1870 census in Berea; Thomas was age 66, keeping a grocery, with real estate worth $5,500 and personal property worth $1,200, from Ireland. Jane was 64, keeping house, from Ireland. Jane died on 24 September 1874. Berea’s record of burials for that year says only “Sept. Mrs. Jane Johnson”. The Grindstone City Advertiser reported her death on the 24th of 1874: “Died. Johnson—In Berea, September 24, 1874 Mrs. Jane Johnson, wife of Thomas Johnson, aged 71 years. More than forty years ago, Mrs. Johnson, with her husband, located on the spot where she died, and never removed from that place until she was carried to the cemetery. She is one of the number, now growing less each year, who can truly be called one of the Pioneers. The deceased has been an invalid, for many years, but was in usual health, up to nine o’clock on the evening of her death, when she suddenly began to show signs of approaching death, and in an hour she was a corpse. The funeral services were attended, on Sunday, at the Methodist Episcopal Church, by a large audience, Rev. T.K. Dissette preaching the funeral service.” Jane shares a tombstone with her husband, and her daughter Eleanor is buried next to them. Her inscription was recorded in 1904 as “Jane Johnson, wife of Thos. Johnson, b. 1803, d. 1874” and in 1934 as “Jane, his wife, 1803-1874.” In 2007, the white marble pedestal was found in good shape, urn on top present although clearly broken off and reattached. The inscription reads “JANE, Wife of TH. JOHNSON, Born 1803, Died 1874.” An illegible inscription follows in small cursive script, possible “Blessed are the dead…” |
