In 1904, Catherine Carman Staples' grave marker read, "Carman, Catherine Staples, sisiter of Henry Carman, d. Dec. 11, 1869, ae 77." The Cuyahoga County Cemetery Inscriptions state, "Catherine Staple, sister of Henry Carman, died Dec 11, 1869, age 77 yrs." An inscription for Catherine Staples appears on the tombstone of her brother, Henry Carman. She was not enumerated in any census in Ohio, but something about her early life can be gleaned from the obituary for her brother, which appeared in the Grindstone City Advertiser on 4 Dec 1869. "One of the old Berea landmarks has disappeared. Henry Carman, Senior, an old resident of this place, departed this life, last Saturday morning, after a long illness. He had attained the advanced age of 80 years,-- had been a resident of this village for twenty nine years, and few persons have resided here, who have not been familiar with the person of the old gentleman, plodding through our streets. He was a native of Dutchess County N.Y. spent his early manhood in the State of Pennsylvania, and the evening of his life in our midst. The funeral services were attended by Rev. S. Mower, at his residence, last Sunday." She followed her brother in death a few days later, although no mention was made of it in the newspapers. She was 77. William Carman and Caroline Staples were married on May 29, 1844 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
