Elihu Crane's age was listed as 79 years, 2 months and 1 day at death. "Inscriptions" lists date of death incorrectly as 1875. The Cuyahoga County Cemetery Inscriptions state, "E.L. Crane, died May 26, 1874, age 79 yrs, 2 m, 1 d." He was a prosperous farmer and had a large family. He was born in Pennsylvania. Elihu Crane and Accious Chaney were married on 15 Apr 1816 in Harrison County, Ohio (Charles A. Hanna, Historical Collections of Harrison County in Ohio). Accious bore 15 children; 7 died in childhood and 4 more as young adults. Two sons became ministers, two daughters married ministers, three grandchildren ministers, one son a doctor (Accious Crane obituary). Their son Elias was listed among the students at the Baldwin Institute in 1850-51. The same catalogue also contained this statement: "There is no store, grocery, or tavern in Berea in which spiritous liquors are sold; and the usual haunts of vice, and the temptations to dissippation, common in cities and larger towns, are unknown" (1850-51 BI Catalogue, p. 25). Elihu was enumerated in 1860 census, age 65, real estate worth $3,500 and personal property worth $800, living with several family members and children of deceased son Reason and deceased daughter Maria. He served as mayor of Berea in 1863 (Shaw). Elihu was enumerated in 1870 census, age 75, living with wife and granddaughter Alice age 15. He sold half a sq mile of land in 1871 east of Front St. on Bagley Rd to A. W. Bishop for $600; Accious Crane was named on the deed as co-owner with Elihu but could not sign her own name; she may have been illiterate (Crane-Bishop deed). From the Grindstone Advertiser, June 22, 1876, regarding Elihu's son: "Mr. J F Crane and family will leave in a few days for Charlevoix Co., Mich, where they expect to carve out a home from primitive forest." John Crane enumerated in 1880 census in Evangeline Twp, Charlevoix County, MI: born in Ohio of parents born in PA, age 40, a farmer, with wife Hellen (40, b. in NY), son John (14), daughter Allie or Hattle (12), and daughter Mattie or Hattie (6). Kids all born in Ohio. Elihu’s death notice appeared in the Grindstone City Advertiser, 28 May 1874: "The church bell tolled on Wednesday morning for the death of Elihu Crane, familiarly know as Father Crane, who was one of the early settlers of this town. His age was 79. The funeral was attended to-day at 2 o’clock P.M." His obituary appeared in the same paper: "Crane.--Elihu L. Crane was born in Union Town, PA. March 25th, 1795, and died in Berea, May 26th, 1874. He was married to Accions [sic] Chaney, April 16th, 1816, and for fifty-eight years they were permitted to live in the enjoyment of earth's blessings together. Mother Crane and five children are left to mourn, but they have hope of a glorious reunion in heaven, for he 'sleeps in Jesus'. Brother Crane came to Ohio in 1825 [other evidence suggests earlier arrival]. For a number of years the family resided in Parma, in what is still known as the Crane settlement [no other evidence that this is true]. Eight years since they moved to Berea, which place was his last earthly home. Br. Crane united with the M.E. Church when a boy fourteen years of age, and from that time until his death he lived as a consistent Christian and enjoyed the fruits of such a life. The society here, of which he was a member, will miss him in the house of prayer, and will seriously feel his loss. From earthly cares and toils he is freed to share in higher, richer, sweeter pleas…" [remainder cut off] (Grindstone City Advertiser, 11 June 1874; part also in Births, Marriages, and Deaths). Elihu Crane's will and codicils, written in his own hand, said: "Berea Ohio [damaged] E. L. Crane Bequeath to my wife A Crane all Real & personal property also money & notes. Everything included. I give her power to sell & give Deed or Deeds. After we are both Dead, then divide what is left. To J. L. Crane or rather to his wife, give Elias Crane $10 let John F Crane have $100 more than the rest. After that is done, then divide equal with J. L. Crane or wife. Also Nancy E. Dorland, Sarah Ann Fairchild, J. F. Crane or his wife and E. F. Matlock. I want $75 to go to the misonary [missionary society] if not paid while I live. I appoint J. L. Crane and J. F. My will E L Crane Witness Nancy E. Dorland J F Crane it is my will that a cheap family stone be put to your parents grave. E L Crane witness Nancy E Dorland J F Crane" [Another note is attached indicating that J. F. Fairchild has left the US for Canada, Nancy Dorland and J F Crane having presented themselves to a judge to attest to that.] Obituaries for his daughter Mrs Nancy Crane Dorland, and granddaughter Mrs Ida Dorland Lewis, appeared in the Berea Enterprise, 8 Mar 1912 and 22 Mar 1912. They died on the same day of apparently unrelated illnesses. Mrs. Lewis left five small children and a husband, living in Welsh, LA. E.L. Crane's tombstone was marble. It was in sound condition, but was covered in moss and lichen. It was also damaged due to weathering. In the past, there was repairs with cement. The tombstone was cleaned with D-2. The tombstone was inscribed.
