comments
Andrew's parents were among the first settlers of Middleburg Twp. Betsey Fairchild is remembered as one of the "pioneering women" of the area (Shaw 30). Daniel Fairchild made wooden dishes which were used by many of the early settlers (John Baldwin and Hoadley accounts, in Shaw). In 1852, Andrew bought 25 acres of land from John Granger for $250 in Middleburg Twp off Nobottom Rd., the same land that had been contracted to his late brother Henry in 1847 (Andrew Fairchild deed, 17 June 1852). He then sold this land to Patrick Welch for $336 on 16 May 1853 (Andrew Fairchild deed, 8 June 1853). He also sold a quarter acre on Front St. in Berea for $65 on 7 March 1855; his wife Matilda is mentioned in that deed (Andrew Fairchild deed, 28 Nov 1856). On 16 Sept 1857, he purchased a quarter acre, the east half of lots 33 and 34 in the Berea Seminary plot, from William J. Case for the whopping sum of $700. That deed was witnessed by Pliny Wyman, who is also buried in Adams St. (Andrew Fairchild deed, 30 Sept 1857). He married Mathilda Aldridge and had six children, only two of whom survived past age 3. Two of the dead children were twin boys who died within months of each other. A one year old daughter, Nellie, died of diptheria, and a two year old boy, Henry B., died of fever. The four children are also buried in Adams St Cemetery. He was enumerated in the 1860 census (as Andrew Farchilds), 28 years old, with wife Mathilda (29), daughter Elizabeth (5) and Jane (7 mo), and sister-in-law Mary Aldrich (17). He had personal property worth $500 but no real estate, and no occupation. Elizabeth was attending school. The City of Berea did not record his burial or cause of death. In 1904, a transcription of his tombstone read "A. J. Fairchild, died Aug 5, 1866, age 33 yrs" but by 1934, his tombstone and those of his children were all missing. Www. Findagrave.com does not list any other location for his grave, and no listing for a Mathilda Aldridge.
