| The Inscriptions for the Old Village Cemetery state, "Furlong, Myron C., Jr., son of Rev. M.C. and M.D. Furlong, d June 26, 1864, ae 18 yrs. 9 da., Co. A., 30 Regt. O. Vol. Inf., 2nd Brigade, 2nd Div 15 Army Corps." Myron's family was enumerated in the 1860 census in Mt Vernon, OH. Father M. C. was 44, born in CT, and gave his occupation as "manager foundry." Mother Minerva was 40, siblings were William B (20, machinist), Julia (17, student), S.N. (11, male), N.J. (5, male), Serin (3, male). Also a domestic servant, Annie (30). Mother and sibs born in Ohio, he, Julia, and S.N. all attending school. Myron enlisted in the Union Army at age 15, 6 mo, on 30 July 1861. He was mustered into Co. A, 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 14 Aug 1861; 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 15th Army Corps. He was wounded in combat and died of consumption on 26 Jan 1864 at Madison, IN, at the age of 18 (Don Labaj, Adams Street Cemetery DVD, 2006; Berea Enterprise, 4 June 1898). He was only 18 years old. "M.C. Furlong, 30th O.V.I. Response by Mr. Wilcox:- 'Among the throng of nobel soldiers, none is more worthy of rememberance than young Furlong. While in the army, he contacted the disease which caused his death. We cherish his memory by stewing flowers on his grave.'" |
