Rev. David Hinman was born 9 Apr 1797 in Oxford, New Haven, CT. He married Malinda (Bassett?) on 5 August 1819 in CT (Hinman family folder, Berea Historical Society). David was a pioneer of Middleburg Twp., with evidence of their residence here from the 1830s: David Hinman's family has lot 107 in the Adams St Cemetery; the grave of his son Albert in 1834 is that cemetery's oldest marked burial. David's first wife, Malinda, died in 1836 and is buried with him, as is his second wife, Mary Squire, whom he married in Huron County, OH, on 20 July 1837. On 24 July 1849, David purchased a 100 ft sq lot on Factory Street from Henry O. Sheldon for $1 (David Hinman deed, 7 Dec 1849). A few days later, he bought from the Trustees of the Berea Seminary for $100 a plot of land along the east bank of the Rocky River north of Bridge St ending at the "apparatus factory." This is approximately where the Triangle and N. Rocky River St. are in 2007. The following proviso was attached to the deed: "reserving to themselves the right to prohibit the said David Hinman or his heirs or assigns forever from making grindstones out of any material now existing on the said part of lot G, and we hereby reserve the [] to prohibit and do hereby prohibit the use of intoxicating drinks to be [illegible] given or sold under any pretence in any manner except for mechanical or medicinal purposes upon said lot or in the alley adjoining it…" James Wallace, founder of German Wallace College, witnessed the deed as secretery of the Trustees (David Hinman deed, 4 Dec 1849). In 1851, he and his wife Mary sold that same plot of land on Rocky River, Bridge St to Holbrooks Apparatus Factory, to John Clark for $1500 (David Hinman deed, 14 Nov 1851). David's family was enumerated in the 1850 census under the name Daniel. He was a blacksmith, age 53, and Mary (42). His son Munson's name was given as Morrison S. His other children were listed as Wm. D [Wilbur F] (9) and Mary E. (6). In 1852, David bought land from Charles and Louisa Hall in Middleburgh Twp for $125 (David Hinman deed, 31 July 1852). In 1853, he bought 6 acres from Henry and Elizabeth Bevans, another pioneering couple buried in Adams St, in the Bevans addition to Berea for $1300. Pliny Wyman, who is also buried in Adams St, witnessed the deed as Justice of the Peace (David Hinman deed, 15 Nov 1853). In 1859, David made a major contribution to the advancement of farming technology, which was noted by Richard Van Vleck in an article from Scientific Medical & Mechanical Antiques, No. 21: "By the end of the last century, most farmers with all but the smallest fields had laid aside the cradle and scythe, along with their associated hand sharpening tools. However, the sickle sections of the new harvesting machines required even more care to maintain optimum performance and minimum draft. Several types of knife grinders were devised, beginning in 1859, when David Hinman, of Berea, Ohio, patented a mower knife holder on a small hand cranked grindstone." In 1860, the Hinman family was enumerated again, under the name David Henman [sic] (63). He gave his occupation as manufacturer, with $1,000 real estate and $1,000 personal property. Other family members were Mary (52, born CT), Munson (22), Wilbur F (19) and Mary E (16). They also housed a Canadian mechanic, Joseph Adams (23). Wilbur and Mary were attending school. In Dec. 1860, David bought land from Julia Palmer on the west side of the Rocky River adjoining John Baldwin's "old mill lot" for $77.50 (David Hinman deed, 13 June 1861). In Feb 1862, some months before his death, David sold the above lot to his sons Munson and Wilbur, with the shop on the land, for $800 (David Hinman deed, 14 Mar 1862). Berea's records of burials for 1862 said "Nov. 6 [sic--probably for 16] David Hinman [age] 66"; its Quarterly report for 1862 said "Nov. 6 David Herrman Consumption Aged 66 years." In 1904, a transcription of his tombstone read "Rev David Hinman, died Nov 14, 1862, age 65 yrs; a 1934 transcription said the same. In 2007, his white marble tombstone was found to be in good shape, with deep incised inscriptions that are very legible despite some dirt and lichens. He shares the stone with his wives Malinda and Mary, his son Albert, and an infant daughter. A baby grandchild, son of Munson, may also be buried in or near the lot. Albert, infant daughter of David and Mary, Rev. David, Mary, and Malinda Hinman have a sandstone family monument and personal headstones. The lot number is 107. A magnifier was used to examine the grain. The marker is grey and all sides of the marker have an inscription. This monument commemorates the five aforementioned people. It was also not decorative. The marker is discolored and the words are starting to fade. The inscription is mostly legible, but some parts were extremely difficult to read. The carving was incised. The stone reads, “ALBERT [son] of [David and Malinda] HINMAN DIED M[ay] 16, 1834 {A…..M….] [Infant] DAUGHT[ER] of David [and] May HINMAN DIED Sept. 4, 1849 A[ge]d 22 Day REV. DAVID HINMAN DIED Nov. 14, 1862 AGED 65 YEARS MALINDA WIFE OF DAVID HINMAN DIED April 26, 1836 Aged 41 Years MARY WIFE OF DAVID HINMAN DIED Jan 28, 1871 AGED 82 YEARS.”
