| Gilbert's father was one of Berea's most prominent citizens, a quarry and gristmill owner who dedicated his life to promoting the interests of the Baldwin Institute and Baldwin University. His mother was a gentle woman who was known for her gracious manners and excellent coffee. For more information, including census records, see entries on Fletcher and Fanny Hulet. Gilbert was enrolled in Baldwin Institute in 1851-52 (Catalogue, BW Historian's House) Gilbert's sister Harriet wrote this about him: "Gilbert, the eldest son, a bright, manly, popular young man, apt in his studies, with all his mother's kindly heart, and mild, loving ways, died of typhoid fever at eighteen years of age, in the year 1854. This was the first death in the family…" His sister Margaret died two years later, after burying her son (Walker 5). Gilbert's stone was transcribed in 1904 as saying "Gilbert M., son of F. and F. Hulet, d. Nov. 6, 1854, ae 18 years" His stone is not mentioned in the 1934 transcription study, suggesting that it was broken and lying face down or missing. In 2007, the white marble stone was found to be dirty, missing its bottom half, the remaining top half cemeted to a sandstone base, but deeply carved and clearly legible. Gilbert Hulet had a marble tablet on base tombstone. It was 19 1/4 inches high, 17 3/4 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. It was in sound condition and was a 1 for the severity of condition (1 being the least and 5 being the most) for the tombstone. Vegetation and weathering caused damage to the tombstone. There was a previous repair with cement. In 2009, the grave marker was cleaned with D-2 and water. The tombstone has an inscribed inscription: "Gilbert M. son of F. and F. Hulet d. Nov 6, 1854 ae 18 Years (not visible)(West Face) and "Our Son" (East Face). He died November 6, 1854 at 18 years old from typhoid fever. |
