Jonathan Appell is a professional gravestone conservator and monumental mason. He owns a gravestone & monument preservation company, New England Cemetery Service. He is a trustee of the Association for Gravestone Studies, and has led workshops at many venues, including the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation. He's on a mission this summer to spread knowledge of gravestone conservation techniques to as many communities as possible in a national preservation workshop tour (
www.gravestonepreservation.info).
Participants in this workshop will learn:
- About the types of monuments and typical problems one encounters when doing gravestone preservation work.
- About the best materials to use for gravestone conservation
- How to clean marble, sandstone, and cement tombstones
- How to repair broken marble and sandstone tombstones
- How to re-level grave markers.
- About acid rain damage and what might be done to prevent it
- Hands-on experience with cleaning and repairs.
The workshop is open to the general public. Participants can additionally earn college credit from the Baldwin-Wallace College History Department by registering for an internship in Gravestone Conservation. Interns will attend the workshop and then use the techniques learned to clean and restore the grave markers in the Adams Street Cemetery. Internships are limited and competitive.
Advance registration and a materials fee is required . To register or for more information, contact Dr. Indira Gesink, chair of the Baldwin-Wallace History Department, at 440-826-2280 or
