Carrie was born in 1848 to the family of Abner Hunt, Jr., in Northfield Twp, Summit County. Abner Hunt Sr. emigrated there from MA, was enumerated in the 1820 census, and was still living there in 1860 and 1870, although in 1870 he was living with his son Calvin's family. Carrie was enumerated with her father's family in 1850. Abner Hunt, a farmer born in VA, was 30, with $750 in real estate. Her mother, Jemima, was 25, born in Maine. Sister Sarah J. was 7, Hellen C. was 4, Mary A. was 3, and Caroline was 2. All children born in OH; Sarah and Hellen were attending school. Her family was enumerated again in Northfield in 1860; she was listed as head of household, perhaps accidentally; her husband Abner Hunt Jr. was listed as a member of a neighbor's household, his brother? Marshall Hunt. Most likely this was the result of the recorder entering the household number in the wrong space. Abner Hunt Jr was 40 yrs old, a farmer with $7,000 real estate and $1500 personal property, born in OH. Jemima was 36, born in ME. Children were Sarah J (18), Helen (15, born in MI), James (14), Mary (13), Caroline (11), and Orrin (8). All children except Helen were born in OH; all were attending school. Carrie married the youngest son of Fletcher and Fanny Hulet, Marshall E. Hulet, after he returned from serving in the Civil War (no Cuyahoga County marriage license). He had signed up at age 15. Although little is known of Carrie, Marshall's sister Harriet reported this: "Marshall, the youngest, went into the army as soon as possible after the breaking out of the war, when lacking four months of 16 years old, served through the whole was, all the time where service was heavy and battles frequent, marched with Sherman to the sea, and was discharged with his regiment, 103 O.V.I., Co. A, after Lee's surrender. He spent a year in Minnesota, returned to Berea, married Carrie Hunt, a lovely young girl of 19 [part of page missing] thoroughly clouded and changed the whole current of his life. Though eighteen years have passed, he is still alone, still mourns his sweet girl wife. He is at present railroading over the same territory that was the theatre of most of his army campaigns, in the mountains of Central Kentucky and Tennessee" (Walker 5). Berea's records of burials for 1868 say "Oct. 8 Caroline Hulet -- typhoid fever [age] 20 [yrs] 6m." Her death was not reported in the local newspaper. Her tombstone was transcribed in 1904: "Carrie H. wife of M.E. Hulet and dau. Of Abner Hunt, d. Oct. 8, 1868, ae 20 yrs, 6 da." A 1934 transcription said "Carrie H, wife of M.F Hulet, died Oct 8, 1868, age 20 yrs, 6 days". Her inscription was located in 2007 on her family monument, legible but worn. The stone is a marble pedestal with urn, covered with dirt and some moss. Carrie's family was enumerated after her death in Berea in 1870; father Abner gave his age as 49, occupation as farmer, worth in real estate as $30,000 and personal property $500, born in OH. His second wife, Philena [Holmes], was 34, keeping house, with real estate worth $350, born in NY. Mary, daughter of his first wife, was 24, born in OH. They had one domestic, Minna or Minerva Holmes, possibly related to Philena and/or their neighbor, Henry Holmes.
