comments
Orin was born in 1852 to the family of Abner Hunt, Jr., in Northfield Twp, Summit County. Abner Hunt Sr. emigrated there from MA, was enumerated in the 1820 census, and was still living there in 1860 and 1870, although in 1870 he was living with his son Calvin's family. In the 1850 census, Orin's family was enumerated in Northfield Twp again. Orin was not yet born. Abner Hunt, a farmer born in VA, was 30, with $750 in real estate. Her mother, Jemima, was 25, born in Maine. Sister Sarah J. was 7, Hellen C. was 4, Mary A. was 3, and Caroline was 2. All children born in OH; Sarah and Hellen were attending school. His family was enumerated again in Northfield in 1860. Abner Hunt Jr was 40 yrs old, a farmer with $7,000 real estate and $1500 personal property, born in OH. Jemima was 36, born in ME. Children were Sarah J (18), Helen (15, born in MI), James (14), Mary (13), Caroline (11), and Orrin (8). All children except Helen were born in OH; all were attending school. Orin.'s family was enumerated in Berea in 1870; Abner Jr. gave his age as 49, occupation as farmer, worth in real estate as $30,000 and personal property $500, born in OH. His second wife, Philena, was 34, keeping house, with real estate worth $350, born in NY. Mary, daughter of his first wife, was 24, born in OH. They had one domestic, Minna or Minerva Holmes, possibly related to their neighbor, Henry Holmes. Orin would have been an adult by this time, and not enumerated with his family. Orin was enumerated in the 1880 census in Sandusky, OH, working in a rolling mill, age 28, single, born in OH. He was a boarder in the household of Jacob Munschel. There is a marriage license for Orrin G. Hunt and Ella M. Higgins in Cuyahoga County (vol. 22, p. 122). The marriage license states that the were joined in marriage on 26 December 1878 by J.W. Buxton. Orin was enumerated as Orrin G. Hunt in the 1900 census, a servant, age 48, living in Northfield Twp, Summit County, OH; he appears to be single (the copy is nearly illegible) and born of a mother from Maine. His father's obituary also says Orin was living in Northfield (Abner Hunt obituary). No deeds in Cuyahoga County under the names Orin, Oran, or Orrin. Berea's records of burials do not list Orin Hunt. His tombstone was transcribed in 1904: "Orin G., son of Abner Hunt Jr., b. 1852, d. 1904". It was transcribed in 1934 as "John G. Hunt, 1852-1904" and grouped with the other Hunt/Hulet stones, ie, lot 174. The small white marble tablet stone, inscribed "Orin G. Hunt 1852-1904" was located in 2007 in lot 122 near Robert Crockett and the Wades, on its face. Dr. Indira Gesink restored it to lot 174, where an empty base of the correct dimensions was located. For more on Abner Hunt, see entry for Jemima Hunt. Orin Hunt's tombstone was a marble tablet on base. It was 11 inches high, 4 1/2 inches wide, and 8 inches thick. The grave marker was sound, but lying on the ground. It was eroded, broken into 2 pieces, and was covered with moss ans lichens. The severity of condition was a 2 (1 being the least and 5 being the most). The severity of condition was caused due to settling and weathering. There was a previous repair with iron pins. In 2009, the tombstone was cleaned with D-2, the base was releveled, and epoxy was used. Sand and gravel, as well as water was used on the repairs. The inscription was inscribed . Orin was born in 1852 and died on February 22, 1904.
