| Although newspaper obituaries claim that Thomas Johnson's family moved to Middleburg Twp c. 1834, they were first enumerated in Middleburg Twp. in the 1850 census. Thomas was 50, a grocer with real estate worth $300, from Ireland. Wife Jane was 43, also from Ireland. Children were Edwin, 20, a sailor, born in NY; Eleanor, 18, born in NY; William, 14, born in Ohio, attending school; and Mary J., 13, born in OH, attending school. Also in the household were Daniel Sullivan, 16, a laborer, born in Ireland, attending school; and John Sullivan, 12, from MI, attending school. Eleanor died a few months after the census was taken. No records of her burial are extant; no local newspapers existed to record her death. Her tombstone inscription was read in 1904 as "Eleanor, dau. Of T. and J. Johnson, d. Mch. 13, 1851, ae 20 yrs, 2 mo, 1 da". In 1934, "1 da" was read "11 d". In 2007, her white marble tablet stone was found to be remarkably clean, but broken in two places, the top piece with her name on it on the ground. Her parents were buried next to her in the same lot. For more on them, see entries for Thomas and Jane Johnson. Eleanor Johnson had a marble tablet on base tombstone. It is 28 inches high, 20 1/4 inches wide, and 16 1/4 inches thick. It had eroded, broken into two pieces, and had moss and lichens. The tombstone was a 4 for the severity of its condition (1 being the least and 5 being the worst). This severity of condition was caused by weathering and vegetation. There had been previous repairs with cement and adhesive. The grave marker was repaired in 2009. It was cleaned with D-2 and the pieces were put together with epoxy. There is shubbery near the grave. The tombstone was inscribed: "Eleanor Daughter of T&J Johnson Died March 13, 1851. Eleanor was born on January 1, 1831 and died on March 13, 1851 at 20 years, 2 months, and 1 day old. |
