Fernando was born c. 1819. He was enumerated in the 1860 census, in Cleveland's 9th ward. He was 43, a day laborer, had no real estate and personal property worth only $50. He was born in NY. His wife Louisa was 44, also born in NY. He had one son living with him, Fernando C., who was 23, a sailor, born in PA. At the age of 43, he enlisted in the Union Army. He was mustered in as a private, Co. D, 105th Ohio Infantry; he was transferred to Co. I, 38th Ohio Infantry. He was discharged ___12, 1865 (Labaj, National Park Service database). A Fernando C. Back of his age and birthplace, but with a different wife, was enumerated in the 1870 census, in Perry, OH. He gave his age as 51, his occupation as farmer, born in NY. The wife was Mary, age 39, born in Canada of foreign parents. Also living with them was Nancy Abrams, 75, born in NY. He was enumerated again in the 1880 census, in Cleveland's 4th ward. He gave his age as 61 and his occupation as carpenter. His parents' birthplace was NY, as was his own. His wife's name was given as Rachel, age 60, birthplace OH, parents born in CT and MA. An article in the Berea Enterprise, 4 June 1898, lists his date of death as 1878; clearly that cannot be correct, since he was also enumerated in the 1880 census. A GAR ledger at the Berea Historical Society lists him as a veteran buried in the City Cemetery, but Berea does not record his burial. His wife applied for a military pension on 11 Jan 1883. In 2007, his weathered military stone was located in the very back row of the cemetery. As the burials in this cemetery are typically west of the gravestones, his coffin may lie under the fence, and his grave may have been damaged by the quarry hole to the immediate west. The gravestone was transcribed in 1904 as saying "Bock, F. C., Co. D., 105 o. Inf." In 1934, the stone was located between the graves of F. Bosert and S. Rannie (its current location) and transcribed "F. C Back, Co D, 105 Ohio Inf". In 2007, a new gravestone was ordered for him through the Veterans Service Commission.
