Henry Carman's grave inscription from 1904 and 1934 states, "Henry. d. Nov 28, 1869, ae. 80 yrs, 3mo." Henry Carman was enumerated in the 1850 census at age 59, a farmer with real estate worth $2500, born in NY. His wife Hannah was 56. Son Henry was also a farmer, age 28. Daughter-in-law Susan was 18. He was again enumerated in 1860 census at age 69, wife Hannah 65, real estate worth $2000 and personal estate $500, both from NY. He was living next door to his son Henry Carman Jr, age 39, a laborer--likely in the quarries--real estate worth $300, wife Susan, daughters Harriet and Anna, and on other side another son, William Carman, age 33, shoemaker, real estate worth $500 and personal effects worth $100, wife Catherine C, 7 kids. The Henry Carman farm is supposed to have been located east of the intersection of Eastland Rd. and S. Rocky River (Main St.). A house standing on that corner was likely the family residence. There are 26 deeds in his name at the Cuyahoga County Recorder's Office, which have not yet been researched. He was age 80 years and 3 months at death (List of Burials and Names). Obituary from Grindstone City Advertiser (4 Dec 1869): "One of the old Berea landmarks has disappeared. Henry Carman, Senior, an old resident of this place, departed this life, last Saturday morning, after a long illness. He had attained the advanced age of 80 years,-- had been a resident of this village for twenty nine years, and few persons have resided here, who have not been familiar with the person of the old gentleman, plodding through our streets. He was a native of Dutchess County N.Y. spent his early manhood in the State of Pennsylvania, and the evening of his life in our midst. The funeral services were attended by Rev. S. Mower, at his residence, last Sunday."
