comments
Mitchell Clark was born in Ireland and married Mary E. Foster, daughter of early settler and prosperous farmer Nathan Foster. In the 1904 Inscriptions from the Old Village Cemetery it states, "Clark Mitchell D., d. Oct. 24, 1862, ae 35." In the 1860 census, he gave his occupation as "teamster." He was 35 when he died of consumption. He may have contracted the disease from, or given it to, his neighbors the Caniffs, who all died of the disease (Jane Ann Caniff obituary, Births, Marriages and Deaths, p. 252.) He had 3 sons: Newton, Newman, and Frank, all of whom died before age 5. His wife was widowed at age 28. She later became known as one of the pioneering women of the Western Reserve (Labaj). She remarried the Hon. Jonathan T. Hulet. She was enumerated in the 1900 census living with her second husband, age 69, having had 4 children, none of whom were still living. Mitchell Clark built the house (red in 2007) on the north corner of Clark St. (named after his family, who owned most of the property between Clark St. and Bridge St.) and Adams St. For more information on his wife and children, see entry for Mary E. Hulet (#106).
