| The 1904 Inscriptions from the Old Village Cemetery state, "Aggions [sic](Accious), wife of E.L. Crane, d. Nov 3, 1881, ae 84." The Cuyahoga County Cemetery Inscriptions state, "Aggious [sic], wife of E.L. Crane, died Nov 3, 1881, ae 84." Accious Crane was enumerated in 1860 census living with husband on prosperous farm (worth $3500) and large family including offspring of her deceased children Reason and Maria. She was enumerated in 1870 Federal US Census. She was 72 years old, born in Pennsylvania. Husband Elihu, a farmer, was listed as 75 years old. Granddaughter Alice was 15 years old. The Crane’s sold land in 1871 between Front St. and Bagley Rd to A. W. Bishop for $600; Accious Crane was named on the deed as co-owner with Elihu but could not sign her own name; she was probably illiterate (Crane-Bishop deed) The Grindstone City Advertiser (12 July 1877) noted Mrs. Crane's birthday: "On the 9th inst. Mrs. E. Crane celebrated the anniversary of her eightieth birthday. Aunt Sally Caswell, nearly eighty-four years old, was present." Berea list’s her age as 84 at death ("List") Her obituary appears in The Berea Advertiser, 10 Nov 1881: "DIED. Accius Crane, widow of the late Elihu Crane of Berea, on the 3d of November, at 8 o'clock in the evening, aged 84 years. Mother Crane was born in Pennsylvania, July 9, 1797; was married to Elihu L. Crane, April 16, 1816, with whom she lived in christian peace to his departure, May 26, 1874, for the land of rest. The precious family record shows a list of fifteen children, eight of whom lived to man and womanhood and were all brought to Christ before leaving the paternal home. Two of the sons became ministers of the Gospel; two of the daughters married ministers; three of the grandchildren are in the ministry--evidencetly the fulfillment of the precious covenant, 'The promise is unto you and to your children'. Their eldest son, Reizin B, died in the triumphs of the faith, at the age of 40 years; James L. at the age of 55; Mariah, at the age of 23; Jane, 41. Four only are left to mourn a mother dear. Mother Crane lived a quiet, orderly christian life, always industrious until disabled by disease and old age; a most excellent housekeeper and her home was known for many years as a resting and refreshing place for the wearied itinerant, and also an asylum for the poor and needy ones; no beggar was ever turned aside hungry, and in other years even the fugitive from the horrors of southern slavery were [sic] not denied a rest, on his flight to liberty or death. She lived respected by all that knew her, enjoying the warm friendship of many and fondly loved by her children, who, both the living and the dead, with the sons-in-law and daighters-in-law are still in the Kingdom of Christ, so []il 'Weeping may endure for a night, joy will come in the morning,' of the glorious reunion in heaven. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. J. Lyon, from Rev. 15.13, selected by the deceased, assisted by Rev. W. C. Peirce, in the Methodist church, on Saturday morning, the 6th, and her mortal remains were deposited in the Berea Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord'. [signed] COMMUNICATED." Accious had a son who became a physician with a MD (Labaj). For more on her family, see entry for Elihu Crane. Accious Crane was mentioned in the local newspapers: Mrs. J.F. Fairchild of Pelham, Ont., daughter of Mrs. Elihu Crane, is visiting Berea relatives and acquaintances" (Berea Advertiser, 11 March 1880) |
