| Tombstone inscription reads: "Geo., adopted son of B. and H. B. Crawford, d. Sept. 20, 1878, ae 13 yrs" Shares stone/lot with "Maggie A. Woodworth, niece of Benj. Crawford, d. Oct 26, 1878, ae 16 yr 2 mo." The Grindstone Advertiser reported his death on Sept 26th, 1878: "A ten-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Crawford died Friday of typhoid fever. Funeral Sunday at the Brick Church." Enumerated in 1870 census, living in Strongsville with Benjamin Crawford, a wealthy farmer (35) from Scotland, with real property worth $3,000, Benj.'s wife Harriet (29), and Margaret Woodworth (7, a niece), and an aged handicapped pauper, Joel Tiffk. Benjamin Crawford enumerated in 1880 census, age 45, still in Strongsville, with wife Belind H [probably H. Belind] (39), and William Woodworth (13, nephew). Numerous deeds listing Benjamin Crawford or Benjamin and H. B. Crawford. They sell 15 acres in Berea to Wm. Carman for $3,000 in Apr 1870. They also buy and sell land in Strongsville. Benjamin Crawford is listed as one of the "wardins" [sic] of St. Thomas's Episcopal Church in Berea. H.Belinda and Benjamin Crawford are listed among the heirs of John Pembroke, along with Harriet Cartwright; LA, Jno B, Wm, and Lillie Richards, Alice and Chas. J. Fish, and Nancy Bowman. Between 1870 and 1877, Harriet Belinda begins to go by her middle name: "H. Belinda." Benjamin appears in a deed with a "Hannah B" as wife in 1884 (misprint?) (Benjamin Crawford deeds, Cuyahoga County Recorders Office online). No obvious grave for Benjamin or Harriet Belinda Crawford on findagrave.com in Ohio. There is a large Crawford/Squires monument in Woodvale Cemetery, Sec. B1, with a large lot and only one headstone reading "Benj. Crawford 1835-1900." They are probably there. A poem appears, in memory of little Georgie, in the 21 November 1878 Grindstone Advertiser: "In Memory of Little Georgie, Georgie Crawford died September 21st, aged 13 years. Grieve not for your little Georgie, Silent now in death’s embrace; For his spirit rest in heaven, And beholds the Savior’s face. Jesus loves the little children; Suffer them to go to him, When he calls them, through the shadows Hovering round them vague and dim. Better far to dwell with Jesus, Than to suffer here below; For he gives a precious promise, He will wash them white as snow. “White as snow,” how sweet to think it, When we bid our friends farewell; We shall greet them, pure and spotless, If we live our lives full well. Calmly rest then, “little Georgie,” Till we meet thee bye and bye; When the shadows are all lifted, May we greet thee, up on high." George Crawford's tombstone was cleaned with D-2. |
