| The Inscriptions from the Old Village Cemetery state, "John, d. Sept. 13, 1876, ae. 77." John Crawford was enumerated in the 1860 census in Middleburg Twp as age 56, a quarryman worth $300 real property, $100 personal property, married to Margaret (50), son John (26), quarryman, daughter Agnes (18), son George (11, in school). All born in Scotland. Living next door to J. S. Smedley (who lived on Adams St). He was not enumerated in the 1870 census. Possible marriage license to Margaret Russell (Cuyahoga County Historical Marriage License index online). "Fined—Wednesday morning, an old gray headed man, living near Lake Abram, named John Crawford, was driving along the road in that vicinity, when he met a neighbor, who was also an aged man, named David Wylie, who was also riding in a buggy. They chanced to meet in front of the residence of Mr. Wylie, who turned his horse to the left to reach his gate as he met Crawford. Crawford reigned to the right at the time, consequently they were both on the same side of the road, but Wylie managed to drive past Crawford, which so enraged Crawford that he seized a bush scythe, alighted from his vehicle and went for Wylie, making furious threats and brandishing the scythe about the person of Wylie in a dangerous manner; but Mr Wylie escaped without injury. Wylie caused the arrest of Crawford and he was brought before Justice Watson and fined $10 and costs. Crawford is a man of temper and is not entirely innocent of trouble with his neighbors, and quite frequently. Wylie, afterwards, commenced proceedings against Crawford on a peace warrant but the matter was finally settled without coming into court" (6 September 1872, Grindstone Advertiser). "Arrested- A few days since John Crawford, and his son George, were arrested and brought before Justice Watson on a warrant issued on complaint of the wife of young Crawford; in which the father-in-law and husband of the complaint were charged with assault and battery upon the person of the young wife. George only took unto himself a wife a few months since, and for a short time thereafter they lived with his father, when they moved into the village, where they have lived up to the time of the present difficulty. It appears that arrangements were projected for the removal of the son and his wife back to the fathers house, and which the young wife opposed. At the time of the fracas the old man Crawford visited the house in which his son lived, for the purpose of removing the household effects; and it appears the son’s wife did not object to his taking what belonged to her husband, but when her share of the property was molested she interfered, and the difficulty thickened which led to the arrest of her husband and father-in-law, and their appearance in a court of justice. An examination of the case resulted in the release of the husband, but his father, less fortunate, was fined five dollars and cost, as a warning against laying hands upon his daughter-in-law’s property" (25 October 1872) Obituary in Grindstone City Advertiser, 14 Sept 1876: "Death of a pioneer. John Crawford, an old resident of this vicinity, died Wednesday, at the house of his son, George, a mile west of town, aged 77 years. The funeral was held at eleven o'clock this forenoon at St. Thomas church." |
