The Inscriptions from the Old Village Cemetery state, "John, d. Mch. 3, 1880 ae 46." John Crawford was enumerated in 1860 census in Middleburg Twp, at age 26, working as a quarryman, living with his father John (56, a quarryman worth $300 real property, $100 personal property), mother Margaret (50), sister Agnes (18), brother George (11, in school). All born in Scotland. Living next door to J S Smedley (Adams St). In 1863, his parents bought and sold a 1-acre lot on the west side of Adams St, bordering an alley (Coe St?) (John Crawford deeds, Cuyahoga County recorders office online). Enumerated in 1870 census living in Berea, a quarryman, age 37, worth $1500 real property and $100 personal property, married to Jane (34, also born in Scotland). No children. No marriage license for him and Jane in Cuyahoga Cty. Deed for sale of land is signed by his father, his mother, and Benjamin Crawford, suggesting possible relationship? (John Crawford to Michael Katz deed, CC Recorder's Office online). This notice appeared in the Grindstone Advertiser on March 21, 1873: "Sad Bereavement—Sunday night a sad bereavement befell the family of Mr. John Crawford, of this village, in the death of an only child, a little son, aged about four months. We learn the circumstances to be that Mr. and Mrs. Crawford retired at their usual hour, the child sleeping in the same bed and at the back of the same, and that Mrs. Crawford awoke about half-past two o’clock to find her child cold in death. Dr. Parker was immediately summoned, but human skill failed to restore it to life. From indications it is supposed that the child rolled over on its face and smothered to death, without even a struggle." Death notice in the Berea Advertiser, 11 March 1880: "Mr. John Crawford of Strongsville, whose illness has been mentioned in our columns, died last Thursday night, aged 46 years. The funeral took place at the Congregational Church, of which the deceased was a member, on Saturday, the pastor, Rev. E. H. Votaw, officiating. A large circle of sympathizing acquaintances and friends regret his decease and the community loses an exemplary citizen. An obituary notice will appear in our next issue." Tombstone inscription reads: "John Crawford, d. Mch 3, 1880, ae 46"
