| Berea's list of burials for 1860 says "May 27 Mary Dammer wife of Wm. Dammer 31" May 27 would be the date of burial. Mary's death is recorded in the US Federal Census Mortality Schedule for June 1860, in Middleburg. Her age at death is listed as 33, her birthplace Germany. She died of "parturition," or childbirth. A baby, Florence, is buried at R16 G3. Her date of death is July 24, 1860, at age 8 weeks, buried July 22. Possibly, as was common, the baby died of malnutrition without her mother's milk. William Daemmer may have been a circuit preacher for the German Methodist ministry; he is not represented in any census, possibly because he moved around a lot. Mary's tombstone was transcribed in 1904 as "M., wife of Wm. Daemmer, d. May 26, ae 33"; a transcription made of it in 1934 suggests progressive damage: "-----, wife of Wm. Daemmer, died May - 1860, age --" and notes "top of stone chipped off, 3 other stones of Daemmer family, illegible". The five Daemmer stones are now almost all damaged beyond legibility. The one we think is Mary's features a heart detail, often used on 19th century grave markers as a symbol of romantic love, and used for young mothers. Mary's base was reset. |
