comments
Daniel and Betsey Fairchild were one of the pioneering couples of Middleburg Twp. Daniel had a wooden dish factory, which turned out most of the dinnerware used by the early settlers in the area. Mrs. Fairchild was especially remembered as one of the "pioneering women" of the area (Shaw 30 and passim, quoting Baldwin and Hoadley accounts). Earliest evidence of their presence in this area is a marriage license for their daughter Mary Fairchild and Jonathan Pickard, dated 11 Feb 1838; the marriage was conducted by Rev. H. O. Sheldon, who according to local legend, flipped the coin that gave Berea its name in 1836. On 28 Aug 1838, Daniel and Betsey sold to James Gilrath for one dollar the right to divert water from the east branch of the Rocky River to his grist mill, so long as the dam he constructed for that purpose did not damage the spring from which they got their own water (Daniel and Betsey Fairchild deed, 28 Aug 1838). In 1939, Daniel bought land in Middleburg Twp from the estate of Gideon Granger, lot one in section 24, for $75 (Daniel Fairchild deed, 1 May 1839). Although his and his family's grave markers were badly damaged by 2007, the 1904 and 1934 transcriptions preserved the inscription as "Daniel Fairchild, died Dec 7, 1845, age 50 yrs, 4 m 7 d." In 1904, he was surrounded by family markers, but by 1934, only his and son HA's remained upright and only two others could even be located. In 2007, only three Fairchild markers remain (Daniel, Betsey, and HA), but city records show that the Fairchilds and Pickards bought 2 1/2 lots (36--Pickard, 37 and 38 1/2 --John Fairchild) on which there are at least three unmarked Fairchild burials (38 1/2) and one tree that prevented subsurface scans (36).
