comments
Samuel and Lydia Francis are not enumerated in the census under any obvious name; the only Francis in Berea is Charles Francis. On 13 May 1865, Samuel bought a half acre of land on the north side of Bridge St. west of Wallace Alley, from B.B. Balch for $700 (Samuel Francis deed, 20 May 1865). On 14 Nov. 1865, he sold the same lot to George Caniffe for $805 (Samuel Francis deed, 19 Dec 1865). It was legally necessary for a man's wife to be examined separately to ensure she approved of the sale of land; there is no such statement in this deed, and indeed, Lydia ("Mip") had died Oct 29 of that year, less than a month after the death of their daughter Adalissa from dysentary. It appears that Samuel, deprived of his wife and daughter, decided to move on. The City of Berea recorded her burial in 1865: "Oct. 30 Mip Francis -- typhoid fever [no age at death given]" 1904 and 1934 transcriptions of her tombstone said "Adalissa, dau of S & Lydia Francis, born Aug 10, 1845, died Oct 3, 1865" and "Lydia, wife of Samuel Francis, born Nov 11, 1808, died Oct 29, 1865." (The 1934 transcription has her date of death as Nov 19). In 2007, the stone was found to be broken, repaired badly, and barely legible. Samuel Francis bought lot #178 1/2. There is no marriage license for them in Cuyahoga County. Lydia Francis had a marble tablet on base tombstone. It was 40 inches high, 33 inches wide, and 16 3/4 inches thick. The grave marker had voids, losses, moss, and lichens. The severity of condition was a 3 (1 being the least and 5 being the most. This damage was caused by vegetation and weathering. There was a previous repair with cement. In 2009, the gravestone was cleaned with D-2. Water and set-rite monument settling compound was also used for repairs. There was an inscription inscribed on the tombstone.
