| Christiana's husband was Franz Frey; her name was frequently anglicized "Christina" and his " Francis Fry," for example in his deeds. In 1947 he bought 20 acres of land in Parma for $300 from Jonathan and Mary (Fairchild) Pickard (Francis Fry deed, 9 Sept 1847). He and Christiana then sold this 20 acres for $400 to William Warner and Moses Fowl on 26 Oct 1849 (Francis Fry deed, 8 Dec 1849). In 1853, Franz was living in Middleburg and bought a little over three acres in Middleburg for $37 (Francis Fry deed, 15 Nov. 1853). In 1855, he bought more land in Middleburg from the Grangers for $300 (partly illegible Francis Fry deed, 1 May 1855). Christiana was enumerated in the 1850 census, born in Germany, age 45, living with husband Frances Frey, age 50, a farmer with real estate worth $350, born in Germany, children Charles (21) a laborer, Gustavus (10) a laborer, Barbara (17), Philipina (11), Caroline (7), Francis (5), and Christiana (2). All but the last were born in Germany; Christiana was born in Ohio. None were attending school. Mrs. John Frederick (the Frey's daughter Barbara) bought lot #57, where their stone is located. The John Frederick family was enumerated after Franz's death in the 1860 census in Cleveland's 9th ward (July 12, 1860, so Frances was already dead), John born in BADE, age 40, a baker with real estate worth $500 and personal property worth $200, wife Barbara (41), children Peter (19, a sailor), George (18, also a sailor), Daniel (16, a ferryman). All children attending school. There is a Charles Fry of German origin in Middleburg in 1870, but age 44, with German wife Mary, and kids Mary (17) and Margretto (14) also born in Germany, and Emma (12), John (10), and Edward (7) born in Ohio. It is unclear whether this is the same Frey family. Berea's burial records for 1866 read "Oct. 4 Christena Fry -- consumption" [age] 58" A 1904 transcription of Franz's stone read "Franz J. Frey, died Apr 2, 1860, age 58." Christiana's read "Christina, wife of F. J. Frey, died Sep 26, 1866, age 58." In 1934, the stones were read as follows: "Franz J Frey, born Dec 2____, died Apr 1860, age 58" and "Christina, his wife, died Sep 26, 1866, in her 58th yr" By 2007, Franz's stone was badly worn and set off center, although still on the correct lot. Christiana's stone is missing--unless her inscription was on the same stone under his. There is a stone lot marker just to the south of and in line with Franz's stone, as if a second burial is there. |
