Marion was the child of Morgan Gray's second marriage, to Emeline Patterson. Morgan had had two children by his first wife, Helen White, whose names were Varnum R. and Mary A. Mary A. may have died before Marion was born, but Varnum would still have been in the household. Marion's family was enumerated in the 1850 census in Middleburg Twp. Morgan Grey [sic], age 35, born in PA, a farmer, married within that year to Emeline, born in OH, age 44, with real estate worth $750 [sic, but age, state born in, and real estate info seems to be reversed with Morgan's based on other census info]. Children Varnum, age 5, and Mary A., age 2, were born to Morgan's first wife. Varnum was attending school. Neighbors were Francis Frey and Wm. Cousin. In 1852, Morgan and Emeline sold 19 3/4 acres of land in Middleburg to Joseph Schindler for $525 (Morgan Gray deed, 6 April 1855). In 1855, he bought 33 acres from the Grangers for $339.10 [sic] (Morgan Gray deed, 17 Oct 1856). Marion was born 28 Jul 1855. A sister, Harriet or "Hattie," was born in 1859. The family was enumerated in the 1860 census in Middleburg: Morgan Gray, giving his age as 40, born in Ohio, a farmer with $2,000 real estate and $500 personal property. Wife Emilene [sic], age 30, born in PA. Children all born in OH: Varnum (14), Marion (5), Harriet (1), and also Lavina Patterson (40 [mistake? She is Emeline's mother, aged 66]), born in NY. Varnum was attending school. Between 1863 and 1868, Morgan made 7 more land transactions with Azariah Everett, William Giger, Francis Granger, Christopher Frey, Thomas Wooldridge (a neighbor), Thomas Alexander, and Amos Fay (Morgan Gray deeds, 17 Feb 1867-26 Dec 1868). Another baby was born in Oct 1865, but it died 18 Nov. 1865 ("List of burials and names"). Marion's mother Emeline died on 31 May 1870 (Emeline Gray tombstone). The family was enumerated in the 1870 census in Middleburg Twp. Morgan Grey, 52, a farmer with $7500 in real estate and $800 in personal property. Children Maria [sic--probably Marion, the sex is scribbled over](14), and Harriet (11). Both children attended school. Also living with them was Lavinia Paterson [sic], keeping house, whose age was now given as 76. Their neighbors were Sanford Gray and Thomas Wooldridge. Morgan Gray married again, to Catharine "Kate" Rush (Historical Marriage Index online). In 1874, Morgan and Catharine sold a half acre of land in Middleburg for $80 to Sanford Gray [Morgan's brother?] (Morgan Gray deed, 2 July 1874). Marion died on 18 July 1876, of consumption, at age 20 yrs, 11 months, 27 days (Marion Gray death notice, Grindstone City Advertiser, 19 July 2007)) and, tragically, his sister Hattie committed suicide in August 1878. She shot herself after her father refused her permission to marry Mr. Richmond, a laborer living with the family (Grindstone Advertiser, 29 Aug 1878). To read Hattie's story, see entry on Harriet Gray. Morgan and Catharine also lost a one year old baby, Freddie, who died on 2 Sept 1876 (Grindstone City Advertiser, 7 Sept 1876). For more information on Morgan Gray's family, see his entry. Marion's tombstone was transcribed in 1904: "Marion, died July 18, 1876, age 20 yrs, 11 m, 21d". In 1934, his stone was transcribed again: "Marion Gray, died July 18, 1876, age 20 y, 11m, 27 d". A note follows: "These inscriptions are all weather worn & faint." In 2007, Marion's tombstone was so worn that only the name "Marion Gray" can be faintly read across the top. It has been broken and repaired in two places. Morgan Gray bought lot 156, and 5 family stones are there in a line. Obituary of: Marion Gray "Died Gray-In Middleburgh, of consumption, July 18, Marion, son of Morgan Gray, Esq., aged 20 years, 11 months, and 27 days." Marion Gray had a marble tablet on base headstone. It had eroded, was broken, had voids/losses, and was covered in moss and lichens. For the severity of condition it had a 4 (1 being the least and 5 being the most). The causes for this severity is vegetation and weathering. There had been previous repairs using cement and adhesive. In 2009, it was cleaned, the old reconstruction material was chipped away, and the pieces were joined together. For the repairs D-2, water, epoxy, and set-rite monument setting compound were used. The grave marker was inscribed.
